Short tip: VMware vSphere ESXi - Uplink redundancy lost on DVPorts: "xxxx/xx ..."

After a recent upgrade from VMware vCenter Server 4.1 to VMware vCenter Server Appliance 5.5 and from ESXi 4.1 to 5.5 I was molested by the following message:

1Uplink redundancy lost on DVPorts: "xxxx/xx ..." Physical NIC vmnic1 is down

Analysing the switches showed that there was no link flapping. This fault message was erroneous.

You want to have a look at the following ideas/questions:

  • temporarily disable auto-negotiation on the affected network card
  • Was a wrong MTU assigned?
  • Is the most recent release of ESXi used?
  • Is the latest version of vCSA used?
  • Are the firmware's of the server (BIOS, BMC, NICs,...) up-to-date and supported by VMware?

In my case temporarily disabling auto-negotiation solved the issue. After re-enabling the automatic speed negotiation the error message and the molesting mails just disappeared. Really strange but this really worked in my case. 🙂
