Short tip: Copying a VMware VM fails: "failed to log into nfc server"

When a upload/download of a particular virtual machine on a VMware vSphere ESXi host is not working a common issue is that required network ports are not opened (yeah, it's "always" a firewall issue!). It makes no difference whether you start the process directly on the ESXi host or on a VMware vCenter Server.

A common error message is:

1failed to log into nfc server

You might want to have a look at VMware's KB article 1012382 which lists all required network ports per product and version.

Normally this information is also part of the appropriate product installation documentation. In combination with the mentioned error message the following network port are often forgotten:

  • 902, tcp/udp - cloning/data transport from the client system/vCenter to the ESXi hosts
  • 10443, tcp - vCenter Inventory Service, searching/inserting VMs

After opening the required network ports the process is working like a charm. 🙂
